Mr X Stitch Introduces – Craftivist Collective’s Jigsaw Project

MK Gallery – 900 Silbury Boulevard, Central Milton Keynes MK9 3QA

Thursday 3rd January 2013 – 6.30pm

#imapieceJoin Milton Keynes’ very own Mr X Stitch (aka Jamie Chalmers) for an evening of stitching with a purpose. Take part in Craftivist Collective’s Jigsaw Project and create embroidered puzzle pieces with provocative messages in support of Save The Children’s Race Against Hunger Campaign.

Next year, the G8 summit will be held in the UK, which means our Government is in a prime position to put world hunger at the top of the agenda. The Jigsaw Project aims to raise awareness and show that the craft community thinks these issues are important.

Jamie will be speaking about his trip to Indonesia with Save The Children and the rest of the project team – Craftivist Collective founder Sarah Corbett, who will also be there on the night, graffiti knitter Lauren O’Farrell, and Craft Blog UK’s Hilary Pullen.

Craftivist Collective was set up in 2009 with the aim of tackling poverty and injustice through non-violent creative action. This type of “slow activism” allows you to stop and reflect on important issues, changing yourself as well as the world. Could trying your hand at craftivism be your New Year’s Resolution?

Visit http://imapiece.craftivist-collective.com/ for more project information, and www.savethechildren.org.uk/craftivist to sign Save The Children’s online petition.

Events

To coincide with our Heritage Craft project, liminal will be hosting a programme of free events on Saturdays throughout the exhibition. Cloth of Stitch Day School with Beth Walsh Sat 20th October, 10 – 4 pm This workshop will introduce participants to needlelace stitching allowing them to create exciting fabrics that involve contrasts of texture, colour and medium. This is a creative workshop allowing participants of any experience to create their own fabric made of stitches, perhaps using found objects or creating pieces on a large scale.

Bobbin Lace Demonstration and ‘meet the artists’ with Gail Baxter and Carol Quarini Sat 27th October, 1pm Join Gail Baxter and Carol Quarini for demonstrations and discussions of their work.

Needle-Lace Demonstration by Beth Walsh and Sue McLaggan Sat 3rd November, 1pm Join Beth Walsh and Sue McLaggan for a Lace demonstration. Historic Lace in Contemporary Design talk by Beth Walsh Sat 3rd November, 3pm Lace is usually associated with the skills and fashions of the past. How then is it relevant to contemporary design? This talk will explore the use of historical lace designs in new ways and in new contexts. It looks at how traditional lace techniques and attributes are used in challenging and innovative ways, in fashion, architecture and exhibition pieces. In a more specific textile context, the inclusion of colour as well as other media and textile techniques, together with the distortion of pattern and scale, is examined by looking at examples of Beth’s work. Lace is not of the past – it can be an exhilarating part of the present.
