MK Gallery – 900 Silbury Boulevard, Central Milton Keynes MK9 3QA
Thursday 3rd January 2013 – 6.30pm
Join Milton Keynes’ very own Mr X Stitch (aka Jamie Chalmers) for an evening of stitching with a purpose. Take part in Craftivist Collective’s Jigsaw Project and create embroidered puzzle pieces with provocative messages in support of Save The Children’s Race Against Hunger Campaign.
Next year, the G8 summit will be held in the UK, which means our Government is in a prime position to put world hunger at the top of the agenda. The Jigsaw Project aims to raise awareness and show that the craft community thinks these issues are important.
Jamie will be speaking about his trip to Indonesia with Save The Children and the rest of the project team – Craftivist Collective founder Sarah Corbett, who will also be there on the night, graffiti knitter Lauren O’Farrell, and Craft Blog UK’s Hilary Pullen.
Craftivist Collective was set up in 2009 with the aim of tackling poverty and injustice through non-violent creative action. This type of “slow activism” allows you to stop and reflect on important issues, changing yourself as well as the world. Could trying your hand at craftivism be your New Year’s Resolution?
Visit http://imapiece.craftivist-collective.com/ for more project information, and www.savethechildren.org.uk/craftivist to sign Save The Children’s online petition.

Corner Pocket Tutorial from Laurraine Yuyama:-
‘Using corner pockets is my favourite method of hanging a mini quilt or wall-hanging besides having loops and a rod as part of the finished design. It is super easy, very functional and uses minimal hanging hardware on the wall. It has come to my attention lately that not everyone knows this little hanging trick so today I am happy to share it with all of you.’

We have had a few staff changes – Elaine Brough has sadly left our staff in order to look after her elderly mother, however she will still be around at some workshops!. Jane Caldwell (nee Medland) has returned from Kent and rejoins the team – we are very pleased to welcome her back.
We still have spaces on some of our workshops. Our Workshop Passport has sold well, but you can still buy them – just £70 for up to 18 workshops – I don’t believe there is a better deal anywhere. Check out our workshop pages at www.threadsandpatches.co.uk.
Don’t forget to check what requirements you need to bring with you. I do have to offer an apology though, we hit a little glitch with our website last month which meant I was not able to update the requirements lists. This is now sorted and over the next week or so I should get everything up to speed. I shall also be adding some of the workshops for next term (yes 2013 already!) so keep checking what we are up to.
The Stitch Olympics!
Coming soon to a shop near you! – This is Threads and Patches Competition for our Trophy Cup ‘I love the it here’. The competition will be held at Threads and Patches on Sat 29th December . The challenge is to make a Fabric Picture no smaller than 10″ square and no larger than 20″ square that says what you love about the UK. You may use any techniques you wish so long as the background of the design is fabric. I shall be adding more information to the website this week.

The ladies from Nimble-Thimble in Buckingham are just coming to the end of their third annual ‘Summer School’, which they say has proved to be a fabulous (if tiring) week.
Jane Templeman says ‘Some brilliant projects have been started, and some of them even finished!!! The most popular classes this year were Twisted Bargello, Tunisian Crochet, Candlewicking, Rag Rugs and Strip Pieced Tumbling Blocks, so we will definitely be repeating them soon. We have lots of workshops planned up until the end of the year, and all of them can be seen on our website www.nimble-thimble.co.uk.
We are particularly looking forward to Saturday September 15th, when Gail Lawther comes to teach her breathtakingly beautiful ‘Clarice Cliff Wallhanging’. (image attached) There are still a couple of places available if you are quick!’

It’s that time of year again – The Festival of Quilts is on at the NEC in Birmingham from 17th -19th August.
This event is organised by Twisted Thread, with the support of the Quilters Guild of the British Isles, and has earned a reputation over the past nine years as the largest, most inspiring quilting event in Europe.
The Festival of Quilts is not just an exhibition. There are gallery exhibitions from leading international artists and groups and a huge range of patchwork & quilting supplies under one roof – with over 250 companies selling unique, hard-to-find patchwork and quilting supplies!
There is also The Quilt Academy with a stunning programme of nearly 100 masterclasses, workshops and lectures, and the Quick & Easy workshops provide another 154 sessions aimed at beginners.
If you have enough energy left after gazing in wonder at the exhibitions and trawling around the stands, the fun continues in the evening with some fabulous entertainment; a Bollywood night, fashion shows, Shakespeare, a cruise on the Avon – lots to choose from. There’s so much to do you’ll leave buzzing with ideas and inspiration!
This is my favourite exhibition every year. We’ll be there on 17th – hope to see you too!

Patchwork Pottery – Quilted craft and afternoon tea with Laurraine Yuyama:-
“I found this little crane lying in the corner on the floor of my craftroom looking all lonely. It was my prototype and the first crane I paper-pieced using my CraneStar pattern.
I decided to turn it into a little quilt to showcase that first crane. Right now I’m not certain if I will just bind it and leave it as a mini quilt or quilt some back panels and turn it into a pillow like the original CraneStar pattern. If I sew another single crane block, I would position the crane a bit lower. I will eventually add this mini quilt as a free pattern extra on my blog so that those who have the pattern will have another fun option :o)
I designed the free-motion quilting pattern in the blue border to mimic the flowers in the fabric I used for the crane. I love how it turned out (even more-so on the back) and would like to do it again on a solid border! The red thread on cream is nice.
Mr. Scruffy is critically eyeing the lonely crane quilt but I think he likes it because he ended up falling asleep on it!
Enjoy your afternoon tea & quilted crafts :o)”
